ABOUT East penfield
Baptist Church

As a sister congregation of the Fellowship of 5200 American Baptist Churches, USA, we share a common tradition with over 42 million Baptists worldwide. This tradition, which began in the early17th century, emphasizes Lordship and atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, believers baptism, the competency of all believers to be in direct relationship with God and to interpret Scripture, the importance of the local church, the assurance of freedom in worship and opinion, and the need to be Christ's witnesses within society.

our rich history

dating back to 1824

Welcome to our church! We are proud to have a rich history dating back to 1824 when we were established as a branch of the Ontario Free Will Baptist Church. Our founders, Rev. Daniel Lyon and Thomas Parker, along with five dedicated women, formed the East Penfield Free Will Baptist Society. In 1829, we separated from the parent organization to embark on our independent journey. We are excited to continue this journey you.

The Expansion

Our first building, which now serves as our sanctuary, was erected a dozen years later. It underwent modifications in 1807, including the removal of a gallery and the addition of a Session Room. Unfortunately, a fire in 1916 reduced it to ruins.

Through the efforts of dedicated members and with support from the American Red Cross, the church was rebuilt and dedicated in 1917. In 1957, we expanded our facilities, remodeling the sanctuary and adding a fellowship and education wing. The steeple was added later.

HUMBLE Beginnings

From its humble beginnings with just five members and their pastor, our church has grown to a congregation of around 200 individuals at its peak. In the nineteenth century, pastors were mostly full-time leaders dedicated to serving our congregation.

However, a shift occurred with the arrival of Luther R. Johnson, a student from Rochester Theological Seminary. This initiated a fruitful relationship with the seminary, and the church was predominantly served by students. James A. Moss became the first long-term full-time minister after Elder Parker.

OUR EVOLVING Journey

We remember and honor Pastor Robert A. Vick, his wife Dorothy, and their son Teddy, who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in China in 1947-48. Their surviving son, Paul, continues their legacy. Throughout the years, many men and women have contributed to the vibrant history of our church.

Their stories of sacrifice, labor, and triumph are woven into every part of our building, reflecting the spirit of this humble yet lively country parish. As our church's fortunes have fluctuated with changing times, we acknowledge that our journey will continue to evolve.

    Making History

In 2022, our church made history when we voted in our first African American pastor, Rev. Robert K. Hoggard, a native of Connecticut. Under Pastor Hoggard's leadership, we experienced tremendous spiritual growth and a renewed sense of community. In 2024, Pastor Hoggard had to leave us to return to Connecticut, but our mission to make history and inspire change did not waver. We proudly welcomed our second African American pastor, Rev. Vandell D. Marshall, who brings a fresh vision and a deep commitment to our congregation's spiritual journey.

Rev. Marshall is dedicated to continuing the legacy of inclusivity, progress, and faith that defines our church. We are excited to see how God will work through him to touch lives and strengthen our community. Our church is more than a place of worship; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of unity and perseverance.

We invite you to come experience God with us, as we strive to continue building His Kingdom. Join us in our mission to create a loving, supportive environment where everyone is welcome, and together, we can achieve great things for the glory of God.
